Nature Walk at Ledges State Park
Details
Our theme for this month’s walk centers on Aldo Leopold’s concept of “The Land Ethic.” The inspiration comes from his words:
"In short, a land ethic changes the role of Homo sapiens from conqueror of the land-community to plain member and citizen of it. It implies respect for his fellow-member, and also respect for his community as such." —Aldo Leopold
We’ll meet for our walk at 9:00 a.m. at the Lost Lake Trail parking lot at Ledges State Park. Lost Lake Trail is a relatively flat, 1.1-mile trail on the southwest side of the park.
The trailhead is located on 255th St, Madrid, IA 50156. As you approach Ledges State Park from the east on 250th St, turn south (left) onto P Ave (before entering the main park entrance), travel south about half a mile, and turn west (right) onto 255th St; the Lost Lake Trailhead parking lot will be on the left side of the road after about 1 mile.
Carpooling: Those who wish to carpool can meet at 8:00 a.m. in the Farm Bureau parking lot, 5400 University Ave, West Des Moines, IA 50266. After entering the Farm Bureau drive, take a right to the parking area next to the lake. Feel free to message us with any questions on MeetUp or email us at centeringnature@ucdsm.org.
During the walk, we will have time for conversation, reflection, and quiet. We’ll identify prairie plants, trees, and bird species, and connect more fully to the native and ancient land in which we live. There will be plenty of opportunities to learn about plants and birds, and to practice the spiritual aspects of nature, which is a wonderful mindfulness practice.
This nature walk is co-led by the Centering Nature Leadership Team from First Unitarian Church of Des Moines.
To attend, please make reservations here. Bring comfortable walking shoes, binoculars if you have them, and water and nourishment as needed. Please do not attend if you are ill.
