6.4 mile hike Gaviota Peak is one of the most rewarding coastal mountain hikes on the Central Coast. The trail climbs from the Gaviota coastline into the Santa Ynez Mountains and gives wide panoramic views of the Pacific Ocean, rolling hills, and the surrounding backcountry.
This hike is more about steady pacing than speed. The climb is exposed and gains elevation quickly, so we’ll move consistently and take breaks when needed. The summit views are worth every step.
bring plenty of water (2–3 liters recommended), electrolytes, snacks, proper hiking shoes, sun protection, and layered clothing for changing weather at the summit. Trekking poles, a small first aid kit, and a fully charged phone are also helpful. The trail is exposed with steady elevation gain, so pacing, hydration, and preparation are key to enjoying the hike safely.
