Matthiessen State Park

Details

Matthiessen State Park, located in LaSalle County, Illinois, is a secluded natural park known for its picturesque sandstone canyons, waterfalls, and diverse vegetation. Donated to the state by its original owner, philanthropist Frederick William Matthiessen, the park offers quiet, rugged trails, including those into the dells and along the bluff tops.

We will hike a 6.5-7 mile loop from the Dells Area to the Vermillion River Area and back. The trail is considered moderate difficulty and offers a variety of terrain and views. There are a few overgrown areas, so pants are recommended.

Matthiessen State Park can become crowded during the fall months. We are starting our hike early to beat some crowds, but carpooling is recommended so we leave ample parking for visitors arriving later in the morning.
