Creepy Fairgrounds Evening Hike
Details
The massive grounds of the Illinois State Fair are open all year and are (somewhat) well-lit for an after-dark hike. But like all closed amusement parks...the absence of people, and at night, make it a somewhat creepy location. In fact in the deserted livestock barns you can sometimes hear the mournful wails of the ghosts of the livestock that were sacrificed for pork skewers and chicken sandwiches. Rumor has it that the premises are still the home of a crazed midway clown, who lurks in the shadows to pounce on anyone who falls behind the group. Fun times!
We'll meet at 5:00 at Happy Hollow, (plenty of parking) which is just inside the main gate on your left at the bottom of the hill. We'll start walking, meandering down deserted streets, trekking through the shadowy barns, past abandoned displays, and around the various historical buildings of the fair. I've laid out a 3 mile route, which should be about right for an evening walk. Be sure to bring a flashlight, as some parts of the hike are not well lit. Be warned....There are no open restrooms at the fairgrounds.
Apres' hike location: The Stadium Smokehouse Bar & Grill, 2300 N Peoria Road, less than 2 minutes from the parking lot at Happy Hollow. I'll post a separate Meetup event for the apres get-together, please RSVP on it if you are going to attend.
