About Our Guest Speaker
Madeleine Goodall is the Humanist Heritage Coordinator for Humanists UK. Since 2019 she has been researching the history and influence of humanism, atheism, and freethought in the UK to mark 125 years of Humanists UK. The major output of this project has been the Humanist Heritage website.
Talk: Doers, Dreamers, Place Makers: Humanist Heritage and its relevance today
The Humanist Heritage project has been working since 2019 on excavating the often unsung history and influence of humanists in the UK, highlighting pioneering figures across politics, philosophy, science, and the arts. In 2023, the project was awarded £160,000 by The National Lottery Heritage Fund to continue bringing this radical history to new audiences, with a special focus on how spaces and places have fostered humanist community, and facilitated collective action. Whether coining words like ‘agnosticism’ and ‘secularism’, fighting for human rights and freedoms, or helping to establish systems of welfare and care, the non-religious have played a profoundly significant role in ushering in reforms and shaping social attitudes.
Who were these people? Why have they (or their humanism) so often been overlooked or ignored? What relevance do they have to us as humanists today, and to the issues we’re still grappling with? Join us and Humanist Heritage Coordinator Madeleine Goodall to hear more about the rich and remarkable history of humanism in the UK, and to discuss what faces us now as inheritors of this tradition.
