Organisations espousing hard-line versions of Christianity have long held enormous political influence in the US. This is the movement that brought Donald Trump to power in 2016 and 2024, clearing the way for the privileging of reactionary forms of religion in a wide range of US laws and policy and unleashing unprecedented forms of corruption and the consolidation of authoritarian political power.

Unfortunately, influential figures on the British far right are now tying a narrative of “civilisational struggle” to the promotion of US-style Christian Nationalism, weaponizing culture war issues such as abortion to divide the population and weaken liberal democracy.

Drawing on both American and British sources of money and ideologically aligned pressure groups, leaders of the movement in the UK often couple their narrative with an element of nativism, racism and hostility to the nonreligious.

Many British Christians are concerned by the attempt to appropriate their faith on the basis of values they do not share, and many British humanists are alarmed at the movement’s antidemocratic aims.

Katherine Stewart is an award-winning American author and journalist. Her most recent book, 'Money, Lies and God' (2025), is a New York Times bestseller, and her previous book, 'The Power Worshippers', was the basis for the documentary feature 'God & Country', produced by the late Rob Reiner. She closely follows and writes about the rise of the anti-democratic Right in the UK. This is an opportunity to hear from one of the leading experts on the subject.

Doors open 7.30pm for an 8pm start.
This is a public meeting and everyone is welcome. There's no charge, though we will ask for voluntary donations to help cover the cost of the room. But you must register here to reserve a place.

Spaces are limited and there will be a waitlist if it is oversubscribed. So please let us know if you register to attend but then find you can't make it. Someone else can then take your place."
