CONC's Weekend Explorers: "Fish Food”
Exploring Mission Creek downstream of Scenic Canyon

For this outing we will focus especially on aquatic insects and their adaptations to life in Mission Creek and nearby wetlands. These invertebrates form an essential link in aquatic food webs, beginning with algae and plant debris, leading through to fish, osprey, swallows and eagles.. If you have them, here are a few collecting implements that could prove especially useful: kids, grandkids, great grandkids, dip nets, tweezers, white plastic dishpans, magnifying glasses. The rocks in the stream are likely to be slippery, so beware! Some people may prefer to stand on shore. A swimsuit, and watershoes (or old sneakers, or other protective footwear) are recommended.

All children must be closely supervised by their parents or guardians throughout this outing. Participants who are non-members will be required to sign the club’s liability waiver.

We will meet for sign-in and car-pooling close to Mission Creek Park's Leckie Road entrance, at 9:15 AM with planned departure at 9:30 AM. However, participants may prefer to instead meet us at our real destination: the Greenway parking lot on Hollywood Road South at about 9:45 AM.

Follow this link for detailed driving directions from our meeting location at the east end of Mission Creek Park to the Greenway parking lot on Hollywood Rd South:

If the weather is hot and sunny, an immersive experience in the creek might provide benefits, but the creek and greenway are also well shaded. Check the forecast ahead of time.

We will finish by noon, so no need for a lunch. Perhaps, something to drink.. Hats and sunscreen would be a very good idea..

We look forward to seeing you on Sunday!

NOTE: Participation in our activities is voluntary and by joining an outing you acknowledge the risks of injuries that may arise. Full membership in our club includes coverage for Public Liability Insurance, but note that others are not covered. Information to become a full (paid) member can be found on our website (https://okanagannature.org/) and others will be asked to sign a waiver to participate in our outings (https://okanagannature.org/Visitor%20Waiver%202022.pdf).
