Crater Lake Rim Campout (Backpack or Sled), 1 night

Details

A first for the group!

This event is open to backpackers comfortable with snow camping and cold conditions.

After we arrive at the southern entrance, we make our way to the office, get the permits, and then drive up towards the rim, unload our sleds and then drive back down to park headquarters, park our vehicles, then, with perhaps only a daypack or backpack step on the Raven Trail for 2.5 miles up to the rim. From there, it's another mile to a mile and a half to Discovery Point.

The Raven trail is 2.5 miles long. There is 600 feet of gain along the 2nd half.

What to bring? Snow camping gear--do not forget your snow stakes for your tent! And if it's sunny, DO bring your sunglasses!

Technically, there's no water there. Bring what you think you might need. It goes without saying, but we can always melt snow for water.

It takes about 2.5 hours to arrive at the southern entrance office. I'll need 1 or 2 drivers to volunteer their vehicles. Everyone pitches in $20 for gas.

The end time is approximate.
