Clear Lake Loop Trail, 5.5 mi., + Historical stop, Dog Friendly

Details

This trail loops all the way around Clear Lake along the scenic McKenzie Highway in Oregon. Clear Lake, the "lake born of fire", is the headwaters of the McKenzie River and was formed 3000 years ago when lava from Sand Mountain reached the river and backed up water to form the lake.

The original forest that had lined the river banks was submerged. Remnants of some of these submerged trees still stand under 120 feet of water and are visible from the trail and by boat. The nearly freezing temperature of the lake makes it unsuitable for swimming.

Osprey and bald eagles, and native cutthroat trout call the lake home. The trail itself, is relatively flat, with just a few small ups and downs.

The pace? Moderate.

What to bring? Daypack, sun protection (wide brim hat, sunscreen, sunglasses), water, snacks, lunch. There's a couple of places on the trail where trekking poles would come in handy.

Looks to be a cool day with a high of 81 degrees.

I need a couple of drivers to volunteer their vehicles. Everyone pitches in a minimum of $5 for gas. It takes approximately 40 minutes to arrive at the TH from Sisters. There will be one additional historical stop.

Afterward, we may elect to debrief at one of Sisters' food cart lots.

The end time is approximate.
