ADHD Medications: What’s Actually Working (and What to Do When It’s Not)
If you’ve ever wondered how medications actually work – or why one works and another doesn’t, - Dr. Jessani will break medications down in a clear, practical way.
Additionally, the talk will review the major medication classes – stimulants, non-stimulants, and newer non-stimulant options – and how they differ in mechanism, effect, and day-to-day experience. We’ll cover how to think about formulations and delivery systems (immediate vs. extended releases, prodrugs), where medications like Wellbutrin fit in, and how to approach common challenges like partial response, loss of effectiveness, or side effects.
The discussion will also address real-world considerations, including navigating stimulant shortages, appropriate screening (including cardiac risk), and how to make thoughtful, individualized medication decisions over time.
Dr. Sehar Jessani is a double board-certified psychiatrist in General Adult and Child & Adolescent Psychiatry, and the founder of Be Well Psychiatry, a Main Line- based practice. She also serves as an attending physician at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia.
