America 250 - A President is Born!

It's Memorial Day weekend! The weather doesn't know what it wants to do, but let's throw caution to the wind and go someplace rain or shine to explore. I know you've heard of Mount Vernon, George Washington's home-but did you know that his birthplace is also in Virginia? It's at a spot on Pope's Creek in the Northern Neck in Westmoreland County. We will visit the birthplace memorial site which also has gardens and a museum, and take a walk on the 1.5 miles of trails + a stroll on the beach. Afterward, we will head 10 miles away to Colonial Beach. We will take a walk around town on a self-guided tour; supposedly there are a few murals(I will research!) All that urban exploration will build up an appetite so we can stop in to one of the many restaurants and have dinner before heading back to Ashland. As of today the weather forecast indicates rain, rain and more rain this weekend. But we won't let ruin our fun! We will persevere and discover what the beach looks like when it isn't always sunny in Westmoreland. If it is pouring out or thundering we will focus on the indoor opportunities. But, a little rain never hurt anybody so we may as well carpe diem on our hard earned holiday weekend!
Bring a lunch or heavy snack and we will eat somewhere at the George Washington birthplace site.
Silver lining: both tourist areas may be much less busy if the weather is nasty... we're Trailblazers of opportunity!
Carpool fee: 5.00 pp assuming a full carload
Dogs allowed: no, as they are not allowed in some parts of the GW site
Hike distance: best guess is between 3-5 miles
Bring: water, snacks/lunch to eat on the trail, rain gear, for carpool and meal out or ice cream, or whatever else we stumble upon of interest.
