Black Bear Wilderness Area Hike: Bear Country

Did you know that there are over 4,000 Black Bears in Florida? Did you also know that Seminole County is one of many Florida counties considered to be bear country? Well, if you did not, now you do! If you would like to learn more about these gentle giants, how we can coexist with them safely, and how Sierra Club works to protect them, consider joining us for a 2-mile hike in Black Bear Wilderness Area!

Our hike will take us through cypress swamps and shallow marshes, with a halfway point that overlooks the St. Johns River. What makes this hike extra special is the vast diversity it has to offer, from the star of the show, the Florida Black Bear, to American River Otters and Alligators.

At 8:30 AM we will meet at the parking lot directly in front of the trail entrance and begin our pre-trip talk. It is important to remember that most of this trail is over uneven terrain covered in tree roots. For that reason, it is recommended that you have some hiking experience if you wish to come along. As well, if you have mobility issues, we highly recommend that you consider joining us for an easier hike in the future.
