Alan Seeger Natural Area and Greenwood Spur

Details

On this moderate-to-difficult hike, we will stroll through the Alan Seeger Natural Area of the Rothrock State Forest on the 0.9-mile loop trail, and then ascend a steep, rocky portion of the Greenwood Spur trail (roughly 900 ft. vertical) to a vista at a rock outcrop. We will return to the parking lot along a forest road through towering, old-growth pines and hemlocks. It should be almost 4 miles in total.

WE WILL MEET AT 11 A.M. AT THE JO HAYES VISTA ON RTE 26 ON THE CREST OF TUSSEY MOUNTAIN ABOVE PINE GROVE MILLS AND CARPOOL TO THE ALAN SEEGER NATURAL AREA FROM HERE.

If it is more for you to convenient to proceed directly to Alan Seeger please let me know below, and we can meet you there at about 11:25-11:30.

Alan Seeger Natural Area is noted for its stands of ancient hemlock (Tsuga canadensis), Pennsylvania's official state tree, white pine (Pinus strobus), and dense thickets of rosebay rhododendron (Rhododendron maximum) along Standing Stone Creek.

The area is named in honor of Alan Seeger (1888-1916), a young American poet who, upon the outbreak of the First World War, joined the French Foreign Legion and was killed in action during the deadly Battle of the Somme on July 4, 1916.

The one million plus casualties at the Somme are among the largest of any battle in world history.
