Various Nuclear Reactor Types with Dr. Matt Memmott
·OnlineOnlineZoom Webinar: Various Nuclear Reactor Types with Dr. Matt Memmott
Monday, February 9, 2026
8:00 PM Eastern Time
Register hereDr. Matthew Memmott is an associate professor in the chemical engineering department at Brigham Young University. He received a B.S. in chemical engineering from BYU in 2005, and a M.S. and PhD in Nuclear Science and Engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 2007 and 2009, respectively. His research focuses on advanced nuclear reactor design, nuclear safety, and system modeling. He lead the reactor group at Westinghouse. He sees thorium reactors — a decades-old technology — as a safer and cheaper nuclear alternative.
Dr. Memmott will provide brief overviews of light water reactors (both pressurized water reactors and boiling water reactors), pressurized heavy water reactors (eg. Canada's CANDU's), high temperature gas reactors, fast spectrum (and breeder) reactors and heat pipe reactors. Most of the presentation will be focused on molten salt microreactors, as the company Dr. Memmott founded, Alpha Tech Research Corp, is planning to build and deploy.

The Emerging Geopolitical World Order
·OnlineOnlineCFIC is continuing our series of Town Hall gatherings. Once a month, we gather on Zoom to discuss a selected topic relevant to our society and our democracy.
Join this month's discussion via Zoom on February 15th at 8 pm EST.
At the recent Davos forum, Mark Carney declared that the existing World Order has ruptured, and he outlined his vision for a new one. In this emerging framework, middle powers would work together to counterbalance and limit the global dominance of Russia, China, and the United States. Carney emphasized economic cooperation, pragmatism, and—importantly—respect for basic human and civic rights.
At our next Town Hall meeting on 15 February 2026, we will explore this proposed new order: how it differs from the current system, whether it is likely to materialize, and what challenges and risks it presents.
Please join the discussion via Zoom at 8:00 p.m. EST on 15 February 2026.- Background document: coming soon
These meetings are not planned to be webinars; the format will be a moderated discussion in which the attendees debate and discuss. Our objective is to nurture a culture of respectful and open-minded discussion, thereby fostering democratic and participatory citizenship. The leadership team provides a background document to introduce the topic, and will also include some questions, available for download from the CFIC website a week ahead of the Town Hall meeting.
