ABOUT KELLY MORGAN
For over twenty years I’ve led a community where thousands of professionals refreshed their creativity, wrote their stories and brought new ideas into existence. These have included books, blogs, films, acting roles, murals, arts shows, a cooking school, water product, training programs and more.
But my life wasn’t always so fulfilling. I’d majored in journalism but ultimately I took a job selling millions of dollars of creative services (the work of illustrators, photographer, copywriters, designers and other commercial artists) to Fortune 500 companies.
I was successful and earning good money.
Life should have been good enough, but I felt frustrated and confused. Something was missing, but what?
Later I realized, I always told the artists I represented: “you’re the creative one, not me.”
That changed while I was getting sober from an addiction to alcohol. I took art classes. Weaving. Dancing. And I started journaling. Writing helped me become honest about my emotions and problems. It wasn’t long before I understood I wanted to be more creative.
At the same time, hearing others tell their stories about how they recovered from their alcoholism inspired me to tell my own story.
Telling my own story reignited a childhood dream to become a writer. I wrote about my past (childhood, love life, etc); and eventually published several books of poetry and became a performance artist.
Still, I remained trapped in my advertising career until I wrote a new story for my future called “My Ideal Day.” In it, I imagined myself walking on the beach and writing in a coffee shop every morning (instead of driving in rush hour traffic).
All of these kinds of expressive writing and storytelling helped me listen to my intuition, make powerful life-changing decisions, feel more joy in the small things and ultimately change my life.
Writing helped to transform my career. I started my own business teaching and coaching others to be express their creativity through writing and other art forms. When they did that, their lives transformed too.
Now I feel lucky to have lived my Ideal Day for over two decades.
What I’ve discovered from helping thousands of other people write and share their creativity and stories with the world is this:
It doesn’t matter if you think you aren’t creative, or almost flunked English class.
Expressive writing and storytelling is something everyone can do . . . and perhaps needs to do.
No matter what, it helps you to understand who you are, become who you want to be and inspire others to do their best.
And while you may have heard sayings like “no pain, no gain” applied to writing, you don’t have to have to be a misunderstood artist struggling to earn your living in order to benefit from expressive writing. Or to do it well.
