Be Free or Die tells the incredible story of Robert Smalls, an enslaved young man who commandeered a Confederate transport ship along with its cargo of weapons. He piloted the ship to the line of Union ships blockading Charleston Harbor. Robert Smalls delivered his family and several other enslaved families to freedom aboard the Planter with his ingenious plan to deceive Confederate outposts through his knowledge of the codes used for safe passage in the harbor during the Civil War.
That is just the beginning of Robert Smalls' many major accomplishments to help defeat the Confederacy, end slavery, and improve the lives of African-Americans in the North and the South.
