New Meetup: Sci/Rel Discussion: Thoughts on Halloween, and should it be celebrated?

Portland, OR
Announcing a new Meetup for CFI Portland Meetup Group!

What: Sci/Rel Discussion: Thoughts on Halloween, and should it be celebrated?

When: Monday, October 18, 2010 6:30 PM

Where: Evergreen Presbyterian Church
7275 SW Hall Boulevard
Beaverton, OR 97008

Sylvia Benner from CFI Portland will represent secular humanists.

The Westside Science & Religion Discussion group is now co-organized by CFI and serves as a forum for honest but cordial dialog between faith and non-faith. This is a monthly event with changing topics. Our co-organizers and conversation partners are generally Pastor Nathan Lewis and Imam Mohammad Rahman, but the presenters may change depending on the topic. We will mingle over pizza and soda beforehand, and there will be a Q&A session after the presentations.

Here are the details for this month:

Topic: General thoughts on Halloween, and should it be celebrated?

Moderator: Bernie Dehler Dehler

6:30-7:00: Dinner and small talk (pizza and soda)
7:00-7:30: Presentations
7:20-8:30: Moderated discussion

Background: Thoughts on Halloween... which could include the following as well as other sub-topics:
-- Can Halloween be celebrated in a harmless frivolous fun way?
-- Does participating in Halloween activities somehow displease God?
-- Is celebrating Halloween somehow an "evil" thing to do?
-- Is there a demon, Satan, etc. behind the 'spirit' of Halloween?
-- Should Christians and others celebrate in an alternative format, such as 'Harvest Festivals?'

Venue: Evergreen Presbyterian Church in Beaverton
