# Where Are the People You Want at Your Event?
CFIC Volunteer Academy: Getting People to Your Events
Week 2 — WHERE: Finding and Reaching Your Audience
You know who would be interested in your event. Now comes the next challenge:
How do you actually reach them?
The answer isn't simply “post it everywhere.” Effective promotion means finding the communities, organizations, networks and platforms where your audience already exists—and getting your event in front of them.
You don't have to be an event organizer to benefit. This session is for anyone who organizes CFIC events, helps promote or support them, wants practical ways to contribute as a volunteer, or simply wants to understand how effective event promotion works.
### In just 30 minutes, you'll learn how to:
- Identify the best free and low-cost places to promote an event.
- Reach new audiences through community groups, event platforms and social media.
- Use speakers, volunteers, partners and other organizations to expand your reach.
- Find local calendars, universities, libraries and other community channels that are often overlooked.
- Build a simple multi-channel campaign instead of relying on one announcement.
The central principle is:
Don't try to build an audience from scratch. Find the places where your audience already exists.
A small, highly relevant community can be much more valuable than thousands of people who have little reason to care.
