Is cleanliness next to godliness, or is it just an old adage?

Everyone's path is at least slightly different. Every other week, we choose a philosophical topic to discuss related in some way to the idea of spirituality. What exactly that even means or whether it means anything at all varies from person to person, and all perspectives are welcome so long as they're shared with respect.

Regardless of how we see things now, those of us having lived in the US for many years have probably hear the old saying at some point or another, "Cleanliness is next to Godliness" But is there any truth behind this? With this weeks topic we will delve into discussion to determine just that. There are mentions of the importance of cleanliness in ancient scriptures, such as the Torah. The renowned secular psychologist, Jordan Peterson, has advocated for the importance of keeping at least one clean room for the sake of one's own psyche. Does that really say anything about any overlap between hygiene and ethics or spirituality.
