Hunts Peak hike
Details
Hunts Peak is the northernmost 13,000' peak in the Sangre de Cristo. Fairly strenuous 2 1/2 to 3 mile hike with 3,300 vertical ft. Route is along an old jeep road (closed to vehicles), then a sketchy trail in light forest up to open tundra to the peak.
Meet at 8 am at signed turnoff to the E on US 285, for Forest roads 948 etc, about 5 miles S of Poncha Pass.
From the turnoff it's about 3 miles by dirt road to the trailhead at South Rock Creek. Road was passable for cars/SUVs with decent clearance a year ago.
