Examining the Base L2 Blockchain Outage with Champaign Blockchain
Details
We are migrating to a new calendar! Please RSVP at the following link if you are interested in attending our upcoming Blockchain Meetup:
In late June, Base experienced two mainnet block-production outages: one lasting nearly two hours on June 25 and another lasting about 20 minutes on June 26. The official postmortem explains that the issue came from a bug in the sequencer’s block-building logic, where stale journal state persisted after a failed transaction validation. The result was an invalid state transition that other nodes could not accept, halting the chain until the issue was patched.
This is a useful moment for anyone interested in blockchain infrastructure. Base is one of the most visible Ethereum Layer 2 networks, and its outage raises important questions about sequencers, decentralization, downtime, user risk, and the responsibilities of core teams when public networks become financial infrastructure. We will walk through the basic timeline of the outage, explain the technical issue in plain language, and use the incident as a broader case study in blockchain governance and infrastructure design.
We will meet in the Enterprise Works building of the Research Park where there is open parking for guests and a CUMTD bus stop. Please RSVP so we know how many to expect, as lunch will be provided!
