Big Butterfly Count 2025

Details
Join Friends of Belle Isle Park as we contribute to this important citizen science, recording butterfly species and abundance in this beautiful riverside park (now with the most species diverse meadows in Exeter).
We’ll do two or three 15-minute counts from 12:30, stopping to have a picnic lunch between counts. Please bring sufficient food and drink for yourself and anything that you’d like to share.
No experience necessary. Supervised kids welcome. Resources, including buterfly ID cards available at:
https://bigbutterflycount.butterfly-conservation.org/
Please bring a pen and paper to note the butterflies that you have seen.
We’ll meet in the mowed clearing of the central meadow from 12:15. The first count will be from 12:30. We’ll then have a picnic nearer the centre of the park, then perform one or two more counts further into the park, taking into account different habitat areas.
Belle Isle Park is located about 10 minutes walk from Exeter Quayside, where the nearest public toilets are. Please note, dogs are not permitted in the park.
Look out for myself wearing a yellow hi-vis top. If you struggle to find us, please message via MeetUp, we won’t be far away and will hopefully be a large group :)
If the weather isn’t good for butterflies we may postpone, so please check here in the morning ahead of the event.
