Hello fellow Backgammon players!
As the Event Coordinator and Host for our Tuesday night Backgammon “Meetup” group at O’Charley’s (by Northwoods Mall), I wanted to share some new information with you. For the last few weeks, we have not had any participation. I completely understand that most members have no interest in committing to attending every week. In fact, I will not be there next Tuesday (9/27/11) because my wife & I will be out of town on business. However, if you like playing Backgammon (or want to learn the game), I sincerely encourage you to attend as often as you can, and please use the RSVP feature so we all can see who will be attending.
Usually, it is extremely difficult to get a restaurant to “host” a weekly group. For instance, Smokey Bones Bar & Grill on Rivers Avenue recently agreed to allow our group to meet weekly in their “private room” if we paid them $250.00 per week! Obviously, that was not an option.
Then we found O’Charley’s! The General Manager there (Brenda) is excited about our group and has reserved their “back room” for our group every Tuesday night FOR FREE. In fact, I dropped off some promotional flyers advertising our group and she will be posting these throughout O’Charley’s tonight. Furthermore, she said that they could offer half-price appetizers to our members who attended our Tuesday night meetings.
The only stipulation is that we actually begin bringing in a group of players on a weekly basis. We understand that it takes time to establish a group with enough members that we can expect a nice turn-out each Tuesday night, but I fear that if we don’t start showing up soon, they will cut us off…leaving our group having to find another venue to meet & play. That would be horrible, since O’Charley’s is being so accommodating and willing to give us discounted food, a free reserved room and free promotion by posting flyers about our group.
As a Backgammon player for over 35 years, I am committed to making this group a FUN group…whether you are just learning how to play, or if you are an expert player! You can count on Tuesday night at O’Charley’s being a FUN night…no pressure of playing in a tournament…no pressure of playing at all! If you just want to come out and observe, or if you want some free lessons on Backgammon strategies, just show up!
If you know of others who play (or want to learn to play) Backgammon, get them to join the group and attend our Tuesday night meetings. If you use Facebook, you can also join the group (and get updates) by “searching” Charleston Backgammon Club.
