What we’re about
Profs and Pints brings professors and other college instructors into bars, cafes, and other venues to give fascinating talks or to conduct instructive workshops. They cover a wide range of subjects, including history, politics, popular culture, horticulture, literature, creative writing, and personal finance. Anyone interested in learning and in meeting people with similar interests should join. Lectures are structured to allow at least a half hour for questions and an additional hour for audience members to meet each other. Admission to Profs and Pints events requires the purchase of tickets, either in advance (through the link provided in event descriptions) or at the door to the venue. Many events sell out in advance.
Although Profs and Pints has a social mission--expanding access to higher learning while offering college instructors a new income source--it is NOT a 501c3. It was established as a for-profit company in hopes that, by developing a profitable business model, it would be able to spread to other communities much more quickly than a nonprofit dependent on philanthropic support. That said, it is welcoming partners and collaborators as it seeks to build up audiences and spread to new cities. For more information email profsandpints@hotmail.com.
Thank you for your interest in Profs and Pints.

With the football season in full swing, coverage of games is likely to reference concern over concussions, one of the most talked-about injuries in athletics. But the risk of concussions exists well beyond professional and college football. Whether you’re in a weekend recreational league, the parent or the coach of youth athletes, or simply aware of how all of us are vulnerable to an unexpected bump to the head, it’s worth staying up to date on research on protecting your brain.
Join Dr. Racheal Smetana, a board-certified clinical neuropsychologist and expert on sport-related concussion, for an engaging discussion that goes beyond playback films and headlines to explore what science really tells us about such head injuries and their treatment.
She’ll start with the basics of concussions, such as what they are, how they are diagnosed, and why they look different from one person to the next. She’ll offer guidance on how to prevent concussions and how to deal with them once they have occurred.
Dr. Smetana also will bring us up to speed on the rapidly evolving research on concussions, shattering myths and misconceptions that appear in the media. You’ll learn what is known about concussion prevention and protocols, repetitive head injuries. and potential long-term outcomes such as chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE).
Turning our attention to sports, we’ll look shifts in views on how long to remove players with concussions from the game, new laws requiring players’ removal in response to such injuries, and what determines when an athlete who has sustained repeated head injuries needs to retire from contact sports. Dr. Smetana also will talk about changes in helmet design and whether certain products actually work when it comes to preventing concussions.
Most Profs and Pints talks feed your brain, but this one also will help you keep it healthy. (Advance tickets: $13.50. Doors: $17, or $15 with a student ID. Doors open for talk attendees at 4:30 pm and the talk starts at 6 pm.)
