Frozen Head - 15.5 miles, 3,400 elevation or 6 miles
Details
Join us for a strenuous hike at Frozen Head. Many trails there may be closed, but not all! About 3.5 miles of the hike will be on a typical trail. The rest of the trails are old former road beds. The challenge of this hike is due to the substantial elevation. We will begin and end the hike at the Armes Gap Trailhead. 1-mile in, we will visit the old prison coal mine along a spur trail. Then we will hike along Lookout Tower trail until we're 3.5 miles in, when we arrive at the top of the famous lookout tower. Here we will eat lunch and take in the view. Anyone who needs\wants can return to the trailhead for a 6-mile total hike with 1,500 ft elevation.
From the lookout tower, we have a relatively easy stretch while we digest our food. Our hike will pass Coffin Springs on our way to Garden Spot (7 miles in). This is where we will take the Cumberland Trail for 2.5 miles along a particularly tough stretch with significant elevation to and around Bald Knob. Just past Bald Knob, we will return to West Lookout Tower Trail where we will walk 5.5 miles back to the trailhead.
If you are an advanced hiker who is unsure whether you can complete this hike, there are multiples opportunities to bail early. You are not committed to the entire length if you discover it's too much.
We plan to stay together as a group. We will take water/snack breaks, as needed, as well as a lunch break at Frozen Head Lookout Tower.
- Bring plenty of water!
