Chattanooga Philosophy

Hey there, my name’s Stephen. I started this group because I don’t believe what most people believe about philosophy. Specifically: I don’t think it’s just boring conversations about wordy books filled with the fantasies of some conceited and lonely white guy.

To me, philosophy is about going straight to the heart of the matter—peering into the structures of ideas that shape every single moment of our lives, waking or sleeping. Our philosophy is our attempt to make sense of our experience. It’s where the head and the heart come to terms with each other. More of an art than a science, if you ask me. Then again, maybe those aren't so different in the first place ;).

I’m passionate about this everlasting conversation between body and mind—the language of behavior, belief, desire, ideas, and fears. For me, the point isn’t correctness, but honesty. Because honesty (with ourselves and each other) is the doorway to freedom: freedom from having to hide behind ideas at all.

That’s the spirit of this group. I want open, curious, authentic, human conversations that help us learn about ourselves and give us what we need to grow—not ideological sparring matches. And if you are the sparring type, come anyway. I’m confident I can help you put your sword down, and I'm ready for you to challenge me on that.

Everything’s fair game here: neuroscience, psychology, spiritualism, physics, religion, sociology, economics, morality, ethics, love, hate, political ideas (if that last one scares you, then you really should come).

Each meetup will be a themed discussion lasting approximately an hour and a half. I will provide prompts and a relaxed form of moderation. I will also uphold a firm boundary of respect--emotionally, verbally, and physically. But please don't be afraid. If you get a little off-balance, I'll be there to gently pull you back to center; to sustain the energy of humility, and release the energy of shame.
