AI: Bloom, Doom, or Vapour?
Details
What are your views about AI and how it's developing? What's your current exposure to AI systems and tools?
As a starter, where do your current views fit on what I'd call the Bloom/Doom/Vapour spectrum?
- Bloom: AIs are incredibly capable, will only become more so, and are going to be great for human flourishing. (Think Ian M Banks' The Culture series, for example)
- Doom: AIs are incredible capable, will only become more so, and are going to be terrible for humanity (Think, for example, Skynet/The Terminator, Ex Machina, or even Her)
- Vapour: AIs are vastly oversold, of only limited value and intrinsic capability, and - though they're probably a bad thing - the main way they'll harm us will be when the AI tech bubble bursts, rather than anything more existential or fundamental.
(COI/Self-declaration: I've moved more to the Bloom + some Doom position over the last year, and would be happy to discuss my journey and why I think they're now much more capable and disruptive than most people currently assume.)
Let's discuss!
