Talk:
Future with Zero Down-Time: End-to-end Resiliency with Chaos Engineering and Lens of Observability

Abstract:
In order to meet the current and ever-increasing demand for near-zero RPO/RTO systems, a focus on resiliency is critical. While Kafka offers built-in resiliency features, a perfect blend of client and cluster resiliency is necessary in order to achieve a highly resilient Kafka client application.

At Fidelity Investments, Kafka is used for a variety of event streaming needs such as core brokerage trading platforms, log aggregation, communication platforms, and data migrations. In this lightening talk, we will discuss the governance framework that has enabled producers and consumers to achieve their SLAs during unprecedented failure scenarios. We will highlight how we automated resiliency tests through chaos engineering and tightly integrated observability dashboards for Kafka clients to analyze and optimize client configurations. And finally, we will summarize the chaos test suite and the ""test, test and test"" mantra that are helping Fidelity Investments reach its goal of a future with zero down-time.

Bio:
Vinod Kumar is a Principal Software Engineer at Fidelity Investments. He focuses on designing solutions to enrich streaming capabilities and leads a team to provide a managed streaming platform suite. He advocates for multiple teams across Fidelity Investments on Event Streaming Platform architectures, standard patterns, and best practices.

Mary Vinothini is a Lead Engineer at Fidelity Investments. Her role encompasses designing and deploying Kafka Clusters on Kubernetes, ensuring seamless operations for the clients.

Talk:
Apache Flink 101

Abstract:
"Apache Flink 101," aims to introduce the core concepts and capabilities of Flink to both beginners and those with some experience in stream processing. Attendees will learn about Flink's architecture, key features, and how it differentiates itself from other stream processing frameworks. We will cover essential topics such as Flink's programming model, state management, event time processing, and fault tolerance. Practical examples and use cases will be provided to demonstrate how Flink can be effectively utilized for real-world applications.

Bio:
Lakshmi Narasimhan is a Principal Engineer at Platformatory who loves data engineering at its core. Currently working on different projects around ETL, and event streaming mainly around Apache Kafka - https://www.linkedin.com/in/lakshminp/

Talk:
Understanding the new KafkaConsumer

Abstract:
The KafkaConsumer has been refactored and a new consumer model has been introduced in Apache Kafka. This model is asynchronous and event-driven and was introduced mainly to work with the new rebalance protocol introduced in KIP-848. The discussion will cover the design of the new consumer model in depth and why this is an upgrade from the old consumer. We will also see how features like KIP-848 and KIP-932 (Queues for Kafka) benefit from this design.

Bio:
I am working as a software engineer in the Apache Kafka team at Confluent. Our team is currently working on implementing KIP-932 (Queues for Kafka). My interests are mainly in distributed systems and data streaming technologies. I recently graduated from BITS-Pilani Goa Campus with a Bachelors in Computer Science.
