Canada is a multi-cultural nation that celebrates strength through diversity, promoting acceptance of all ethnicities and beliefs. But historically, Canada was created through the combination of two bitterly opposed cultures, English and French. 250 years ago, the English became dominant in North America and the French of Quebec have felt marginalized ever since. 20 years ago, Quebec very nearly separated from Canada.
In this session, we'll discuss the general history of British and French North America and the underlying tensions between these two cultures. We'll then turn to details surrounding more recent events in the late 20th century, and finally will examine the present relationship between English and French Canada and how Canada's example can apply to other countries.
Guest Speaker: Matt Livingstone
Matt Livingstone was born in Calgary, Alberta Canada and spent much of his life in Kelowna, BC. He studied psychology at the University of British Columbia and moved to Japan in March, 2015 to work as an English teacher. He does not speak French.
