8th Annual George Chad Memorial Euchre Tournament (GCMET)

Details

We’re thrilled to announce the annual tournament is back! Formerly known as the George Parke Memorial Euchre Tournament (GPMET), we are now calling it the GCMET, to honor the memories of both George Parke and Chad Phillips, two amazing people in our euchre community.

Date: Sunday, May 7th, 2023
Time: 10:45am complimentary brunch buffet; tourney starts at 12:00pm Place: McGee's Tavern & Grille, 950 W. Webster, Chicago, IL 60614

About the event:
We’ll be employing a slightly different format for the progressive euchre tournament. The basics are this: 1) Show up, 2) pay your $30 donation in advance, 3) sign in, and 4) enjoy complimentary brunch buffet, paid beverages and socialize until we start. Sign-ins will be shutoff at NOON; no exceptions. We will start promptly at noon. We are limiting this tournament to 52 players. No partner in advance needed.

To ensure your spot, 1) please RSVP to Buzz at mjbazzetta@rcn.com; 2) PREPAY your $30 donation via Zelle (773.420.8694) or Venmo (@buzzvail). Registration is through Buzz only. Please include your cell number and email address.

For each round, each player will draw a card (for example, Ace of Hearts is partnered with Ace of Diamonds; they play against Ace of Spades partnered with Ace of Clubs and sit at Table 1). 2H+2D against 2S+2C @ Table 2, etc. After each round, each player will redraw a new card (you may or may not have the same partner/opponents). This is completely random.

There will be a schedule of 6-8 rounds. Follow the schedule, record your points from each round, mark down if you won/lost/tied, and have fun! The winner will be determined by collecting all players' scores, and the highest score total from the day wins.

We will also be holding a 50/50 raffle. At the end of the event, we will be drawing one raffle ticket. 50% of the money goes to the winner; 50% goes to the American Cancer Society. There is no limit on the number of tickets you may buy!!

Food & Drink Specials (subject to change):
• $4 Mimosas
• $4 Miller Lite and Coors Light drafts
• $4 New Belgium VooDoo Ranger Juicy Haze IPA (Beer of the Month)
• $5 House Bloody Marys
• $5 Well Cocktails
• $6 Call Cocktails
• $6 Glasses of Wine
• Complimentary Brunch Buffet (from 10:45-11:45am)!

Since the inception of this tournament, we've donated $12,620 to the American Cancer Society. Let's do our best to add to that total!

Cheers,
Buzz, Jody & Yamuna

The tournament: George was a man who would partner with anyone. Sure, he had the winning spirit like all of us do, but he was always out for the fun and enjoyment of the game. So, in the spirit of George's philosophy toward the game, this will be a totally random Progressive Euchre Tournament. This means there are no traveling partners.

"George Parke, to many, Grandpa George or simply GG died peacefully in his home surrounded by his family, March 8, 2013. Honorable man, proud grandfather, loving Dad, awesome father-in-law, great neighbor and a friend to many."

To say that Chad was awesome just wasn’t enough. He was so awesome; he truly deserved the title Captain Awesome. Whether it was a night out for euchre, trivia, board games, escape rooms, karaoke, sports, concerts or simply hanging out, he always tried to make anyone there feel welcome and made sure everyone had fun. With so many cherished memories he created in life, I’m sure it’s hard to pick which ones to reminisce about. But, I think what we can all agree upon is how much more awesome he made this world. His death has left a huge hole in a lot of lives, but if we keep the memories of his awesomeness alive, he’ll always be with us.

Chad “Captain Awesome” Phillips, passed away March 25th, 2022. His life was cut short, but the number of memories he created was plentiful. To help honor his memory, and love for euchre, we invite all to come out and play some euchre and share stories…which I’m sure there will be plenty. [Tribute written by: Jason Wright]

About Progressive Euchre:
• 1st: The basic (Hoyle) rules of Euchre are applied. "Screw the dealer" is in; other variations (e.g. "ace-no-face," "farmer's hand" etc.) are out. The first dealer at each table is determined by someone taking the cards, shuffling, offering a cut, and then flipping up the cards one at a time to each player in order until the first BLACK jack is flipped up. That person gets the honor of the first deal. This is done at the beginning of every round at every table.
• 2nd: The standard format is slightly varied. We play progressive euchre; each player is possibly partnered up with a different player each round. Each round, every player deals twice (8 deals total), then follows his/her schedule to the next round.
• 3rd: A successful loner is worth 4 points. A euchre on a loner is worth 3 points.
• 4th: You may score more than 10 points in a round. The winner is the person with the most points. So, it behooves you to score a lot and score often!
