About us
Chicago has always been a city of neighborhoods — and a city of families trying to make smart decisions in a place that doesn’t make any decision simple.
The Chicago Family Room is a small community of homeowners, renters who want to be homeowners, parents, working professionals, and people in life chapters where the questions are bigger than what’s for dinner. We meet — in small groups around the city and online — to talk to each other about the things that come up in actual family rooms. Whether to buy now or wait. How a mortgage really works once you’re in one. What to do when a parent is aging. How to think about insurance, taxes, and the long-term stuff when life keeps moving faster than your plans for it.
Most of our gatherings are intentionally small. Sometimes Sunday brunch. Sometimes a quiet weeknight at a café or community space. Always seated, always conversational, never lecture-style. You’ll introduce yourself, end up in a small discussion group with four or five others, and walk out knowing a few people you’re genuinely glad you met.
Topics members tend to bring up: first homes and forever homes, mortgages and refinancing, how families coordinate big decisions, insurance questions that don’t get straight answers anywhere else, raising kids while also helping parents, what running a small business looks like in a city like this, and — for the many members in this city with ties to other countries — what the cross-border version of all of it looks like.
Who shows up: - Lifelong Chicagoans and people who landed here last year - Native-born members and first-, second-, third-generation Americans - Young couples figuring it out, established families re-figuring it out - Small business owners, solopreneurs, and entrepreneurs who navigate the same family decisions in their own way - People who simply find these conversations interesting
There’s no profile you have to fit.
A few things this isn’t: It’s not a sales group. It’s not a pitch funnel. No products are offered or solicited. Nothing said here is legal, tax, real estate, or investment advice. We always recommend working with licensed professionals in the right jurisdictions before any actual decision.
