Casper Last, an impoverished genius, uses his time machine in to become wealthy in a one time scam, and then “retire” the machine because, well, “time travel!!!”. But shadowy organization called the Otherhood gains control of the device and uses it to preserve the reign of the British Empire, making it a dominant political power well into the 20th century, with fantastical and occult repercussions…
Great Work of Time is a novella available as part of several collected works: a short story collection called “Novelty and Souvenirs”, collected short fiction of John Crowley, and an earlier four story collection titled “Novelty” or "Novelty: Four Stories", again by John Crowley. Limited availability in libraries (I did see an eBook version offered on Hoopla), but many used book sites (Thrift Books, Abe Books) have it at an a cost averaging under $7.00, and of course, Amazon.
