TALKS

Reservoir Sampling
By Sand Ip

Abstract: For large sets of streaming data, it is not practical to download the entire set for analysis. In this talk, we'll take a look at reservoir sampling and how it chooses sample data with randomized algorithms.

Bio: Sand Ip began her career as an electrical engineer before transitioning into software engineering in 2014 and is now a Backend Engineer at Numerator. She is a co-organizer of PyLadies Chicago and also helps with ChiPy Algo SIG.

Fun and Friendly Computer Science
By Mercedes Bernard

Abstract Computer science concepts like Big O Notation, set theory, and data structures sound intimidating, but they don’t have to be! This talk will dive into some fundamental computer science topics and debunk the myth that only ‘real’ programmers know CS.

Whether you are a bootcamp grad, self-taught career switcher, or someone who, like me, didn't pay attention in night class, join me as we explore some computer science theory behind the code we write every day through fun illustrations and real-world examples.

Bio: Mercedes Bernard is a senior software engineer and engineering manager with Tandem in Chicago, Illinois. She has worked with clients in a wide range of industries including (but not limited to!) healthcare, performing arts, beverage distribution, hospitality, luxury consumer goods, and government. In her projects, she values technical know-how, non-technical language, and empathy so her clients and team members feel empowered, comfortable, and heard. Outside of work, she tries to unplug and enjoys fiber arts, particularly dyeing wool, spinning yarn, and crocheting. She's also started a mentorship community in Chicago for those starting their dev careers called Dev Together.
