📖 Zoopolis: A Political Theory of Animal Rights by Sue Donaldson & Will Kymlicka – Casual Book Discussion
The focus will be on reimagining animal rights through the lens of political theory. We’ll explore how the authors move beyond the traditional animal rights paradigm by proposing that animals should be seen not only as individuals with rights but also as members of distinct political communities. The discussion will consider their categories of animal citizenship (domesticated animals as co-citizens, wild animals as sovereigns, and liminal animals as denizens), and how concepts like inclusion, self-determination, and justice might look when applied across species lines. We’ll reflect on how recognizing animals as participants in society challenges us to expand our ideas of justice and belonging.
Anyone interested in these topics is welcome, whether you’ve finished the book or are still reading. All attendees are kindly asked to please order plant-based out of respect for the purpose of the group.
Lastly, please be serious about your RSVP. This is designed to be an intimate experience, not a casual drop-in event. I reserve the right to remove members who no-show or who cancel their confirmed RSVP within 24 hours of the event starting. Thank you for your understanding.
