Get ready for a laid-back summer weekend combining camping, biking, hiking, swimming, kayaking, small-town exploring, and a little Wisconsin history.
Our home base will be Sandhill Station State Campground near Lake Mills, a small, primitive campground tucked into peaceful oak savanna habitat and conveniently located right along the Glacial Drumlin State Trail.
This is the kind of weekend where we can wake up with the birds, hit the trail in the morning, cool off in the lake in the afternoon, and finish the day around the campfire.

THE GLACIAL DRUMLIN STATE TRAIL
The campground's biggest bonus is that we're practically sitting on the Glacial Drumlin State Trail.
The trail stretches 52 miles across Dane, Jefferson and Waukesha counties, following a former railroad corridor through a mix of farmland, wetlands, woods and small Wisconsin communities.
Whether you're up for a casual morning ride or a longer adventure, there are plenty of options to customize the mileage.

FRIDAY — ARRIVE, SET UP & SUNSET
Settle Into Camp
Arrive Friday afternoon, set up camp and get comfortable in our little corner of Wisconsin.
Then we'll head out for the weekend's first adventure.
Sunset at Sandy Beach
Just a 5–7 minute drive from Sandhill Station, Sandy Beach on Rock Lake is our Friday evening destination.
It's only about 2–3 miles from camp.
SATURDAY — TRAIL DAY + ROCK LAKE
Saturday is our big outdoors day.
Morning: Hike or Bike
We'll start the day with a morning adventure along the Glacial Drumlin State Trail. Depending on the group's mood, choose your own adventure:
Bike ride and explore part of the rail trail. Hike and enjoy a more relaxed pace through the surrounding landscape
No need to conquer the entire 52 miles. We're here for the scenery, not a trail-induced identity crisis.
Lunch in London
After our morning adventure, we'll head to the nearby community of London, Wisconsin, for lunch and a little small-town exploring.
London is a tiny historic community with a classic Wisconsin feel.
Afternoon: Rock Lake Time
After lunch, it's time to head back toward Rock Lake.
Options include:
- Swimming
- Kayaking or paddling
- Hanging out on the beach
- Another short hike for anyone who still has energy
Saturday Potluck and Night:
Campfire: Back at camp, we'll fire up the campfire, share food (you know the drill) and stories, and enjoy a proper Wisconsin summer night under the stars.
Before heading home, we'll squeeze in one more Wisconsin gem.
SUNDAY: AZTALAN STATE PARK
Located near Lake Mills, Aztalan State Park preserves one of Wisconsin's most important archaeological sites, the remains of an ancient Native American settlement dating back roughly 1,000 years.
The park features reconstructed palisades, stockades and platform mounds, along with trails through prairie, wetlands and woodland.
It's a great way to add a little history to our outdoor weekend.
