Location: Ned Brown Forest Preserve (AKA Busse Woods) in Elk Grove, IL. It’s a massive, 3500+ acre park, with a 460 acre lake. It’s also in a very central location from most of us, being that it’s approximately 30-35 minutes from The Loop, Deerfield, and Naperville.
Please feel free to invite your significant other. I mean who else is going to watch the kids while we “show em’ how it’s done?” Am I right?!
Plus if your kids have a short attention span like mine there are plenty of trails, scenery, open fields and even an elk habitat where you can see live elk from the trail. It’s pretty cool.
Fishing: Residents under the age of 16 can fish for free in Illinois. Adults can either not fish (for free), get a 24-hour license for $5.50, or an annual license for $15.00. Licenses can be purchased online and printed out or even purchased on your phone. I highly suggest getting a license because park rangers have the authority to fine you around $100 for fishing without a license.
If all you have is a rusty rod in the garage, I'll have plenty of rods for both parents and kids. I’ll also bring plenty of bait along for everybody. I’m not an expert, but I go fishing often enough to know the basics and can help you guys find the right spots to actually catch something.
According to the site, there are catfish, large and small mouth bass, bluegill, walleye, and crappie in the lake. There are limits to the size and amount of fish you can keep. However, I plan to catch and release.
When: To have any luck catching fish you need to get out there as early as possible. I’ll get there around 8am and plan to stay until about Noon.
