All About SQL Managed Instance - Next-Gen GP
Azure SQL Managed Instance Next‑Gen General Purpose introduces a redesigned storage and resource model that fundamentally changes how performance and scale are delivered compared to the previous GP tier. Instead of per‑file performance limits, Next‑Gen GP enforces instance‑wide I/O quotas, resulting in lower and more predictable I/O latency, higher aggregate throughput, and significantly increased database density per instance. The tier expands core limits—including maximum vCores, storage capacity, number of databases, and log throughput—while adding finer‑grained control over IOPS and memory configuration, enabling workloads to be sized more precisely to their performance needs. These changes allow Next‑Gen GP to support larger and more demanding OLTP and mixed workloads than classic GP, while preserving full SQL Server compatibility, built‑in high availability, and the operational simplicity expected from a managed PaaS offering.
