๐ WHY OLD IRVING PARK?
Often described as a โsuburb within the city,โ Old Irving Park is a peaceful, tree-lined neighborhood about seven miles from downtown, with a rich architectural history.
The community took shape in the early 1870s around a stop on the Chicago & North Western Railway. Originally called Irvington, it was renamed to avoid confusion with another Illinois town. Its location made it attractive to families looking for more space while maintaining access to the city.
Following the Great Chicago Fire, Chicagoโs northwest side continued to grow as people sought new homes and opportunities. After annexation into Chicago in 1889, improved infrastructure helped transform the former suburb into an established urban neighborhood.
Today, Old Irving Parkโs architectural character spans ornate Victorian and Queen Anne homes, Craftsman residences, and early 20th-century bungalows. Its leafy streets and historic homes offer a glimpse into Chicagoโs development beyond the downtown landmarks. ๐ก๐ณ
