Texas BBQ Series: Where Smoke Meets Soul: A BBQ Adventure to Historic Luling
Details
Join us for a Saturday road trip to Luling, Texas, home to not one, but two legendary Central Texas barbecue destinations. Instead of debating which spot is better from behind a keyboard, we're taking the ultimate BBQ field trip and tasting for ourselves!
We'll visit both City Market and Luling Bar-B-Q, then compare notes on brisket, sausage, ribs, sides, atmosphere, and overall experience. One is a former Texas Monthly Top 5 barbecue destination known for its iconic pit room and butcher-paper service, while the other is famous for its mesquite-smoked meats, Certified Angus brisket, and scratch-made sides.
This isn't just lunch. It's a Texas barbecue adventure.
Our first stop is the iconic City Market, one of Texas's most celebrated barbecue joints and a former Top 5 selection by Texas Monthly.
As Texas Monthly described it, visitors arrive as "fellow pilgrims" making their way toward one of barbecue's "holy of holies" - the legendary pit room tucked inside the restaurant. Step through the swinging door and you'll find yourself surrounded by the aroma of burning post oak, watching pitmasters slice brisket, ribs, and house-made sausage fresh to order.
Then we'll head over to Luling Bar-B-Q, another local institution serving authentic Texas barbecue. Known for its mesquite-smoked meats, Certified Angus brisket, signature sausage, homemade sides, and classic small-town Texas hospitality, it's a worthy contender in our quest for barbecue greatness.
The Great Luling BBQ Showdown
What makes this meetup especially fun is that we'll get to experience two distinct styles of Texas barbecue and decide for ourselves which one comes out on top.
City Market
• Traditional pit-room experience
• Meat sliced fresh and served directly on butcher paper
• Smokes over post oak, the classic Central Texas wood known for its clean, balanced smoke flavor
• Old-school Texas BBQ atmosphere and communal dining experience
Luling Bar-B-Q
• Mesquite-smoked meats with a bolder, more robust smoke profile
• Certified Angus brisket and house-made sausage
• Traditional restaurant service with plates, sandwiches, and indoor/outdoor seating
• Open seven days a week and beloved by locals and travelers alike
Post Oak vs. Mesquite
Does the clean, classic flavor of post oak win, or does the bold Texas character of mesquite take the crown?
Afterwards let's check out historic Luling.
