Welcome to our new group and to our first Meetup!
As the summer of '25 is starting to wind down ... let's get outside and go kayaking with Mountain Valley Guides. NO EXPERIENCE NEEDED. Their guides will have you paddling in minutes. Gear, kayak, guides and instruction are all included in the price.
About the Tour: Leaving from the Newburgh Waterfront this 2 hour tour will head east across the Hudson River to Denning's Point just south of the City of Beacon. Our paddle will turn south as we paddle around the south end and make our way up into Fishkill Creek . This is the Hudson River "back country", a calm peaceful stretch of water full of birds including bald eagles. Our paddle continues up to a beautiful waterfalls where we will take sometime just to relax and enjoy the peaceful surroundings. Bring plenty of drinking water along with snacks and "cold beverages" to enjoy in this unique location.

GETTING THERE: for those without a car, Metro-North to BEACON STATION then Uber over to the Newburgh Watefront.
- The 8:55AM Metro-North out of Grand Central Terminal gets you to Beacon at 10:27AM
- From Beacon, it's a 20-min share ride to the kayak meeting point
- I will be taking the train. Let me know if you want to go together
Drivers: you can meet us at the Newburgh Waterfront at 11:30am to sign in.
After kayak we'll have late lunch at Hudson Tacos right across the street from the waterfront. Thereafter we’ll head back to Beacon and make a stop at an amazing chocolate shop on Main Street in Beacon then pick up return train home.

As the summer of ‘25 winds down, come join us as we experience the beauty of the Hudson Valley with a LEISURELY Short But Sweet hike up to ANTHONY'S NOSE, followed by an OPTIONAL walk across the Bear Mountain Bridge into Bear Mountain State Park.
About Anthony's Nose: This is a rugged ridge in the Hudson Highlands near Cortlandt Manor. A steep, 500-foot rock staircase takes you up the first section of the 2.6-mile hike, then a relatively flat trail leads to an overlook with views of the Hudson River and Bear Mountain Bridge.
GETTING THERE: In the morning, we'll meet at GRAND CENTRAL to take the 8:55AM Metro-North to MANITOU.
AGENDA: Once we get to Manitou, we'll walk on paved road (AKA Route 9D) about 1.5 miles to the Anthony's Nose trailhead. The trail starts out with some simple scrambling but flattens out as you reach the top. At the top there are some spectacular views of Bear Mountain vicinity. We'll have lunch at the top before making our way back down.
Thereafter, once we come back down, those who do not wish to continue on to the Bridge can make your own way back to Manitou station. Check MTA schedule for train from Manitou back to NYC.
Those who wish to continue, we'll then make our way to the Bear Mountain Bridge - don't forget your cameras the views from the bridge is simply spectacular!
Crossing the Bear Mountain Bridge will then take us into Bear Mountain State Park. We'll do some explorin' around the park before heading home.
From right outside Bear Mountain Inn, there is a 5:19PM Shortline (Coach USA) Bus back to PORT AUTHORITY BUS TERMINAL. One-way bus fare is $14.35 payable to the bus driver IN CASH ONLY.
If you don’t want to take the bus, you can uber to Peekskill station (20-mins drive away) where trains leave every hour back to Grand Central Terminal.
PLEASE NOTE, day's agenda is not written in stone and is subject to changes. Come with an open mind for adventure and flexibility for whatever the day might bring.
HIKE INTENSITY: Easy to Moderate. Hike starts out walking on paved roads, followed by a short scrambling to reach the top of Anthony's Nose, followed by an easy breezy bridge crossing.
TOTAL MILEAGE: 3 miles for just Anthony's Nose hike. Plus about 2 additional miles if you wish to cross the Bear Mountain Bridge.
PACE: We go at LEISURELY PACE AND NO ONE WILL BE LEFT BEHIND. FAST HIKERS STAY AWAY!!!!
DURATION: This is an all-day event.
THE IMPORTANT STUFF:
- Dress in non-cotton layers.
- Wear appropriate shoes suitable for hiking.
- Bring at least 3 liters of liquid to stay hydrated.
- Bring lunch and snacks for yourself.
- Bring sunscreen, insect repellent, head cover
- Carry all your stuff in a backpack. You will need your hands free for some light rock scrambling up to Anthony's Nose!!
- Bring a sense of adventure and a positive attitude. A smile also goes a long way. Please leave the drama and crankiness at home.

MEETUP FEE: a $2.00 Meetup fee will be collected when we meet to help defray the cost of keeping this group going.

- Summer’s Last Hurrah Day TripMoynihan Train Hall at Penn Station, New York, NY
As the summer of '25 fades away, let's take a day trip to upstate to visit the pretty village of HUDSON, NY reachable on AMTRAK out of Moynihan Train Hall.
for this Meetup everyone has to be proactive and book train ticket individually. TO MAINTAIN RSVP INTEGRITY, ALL INTERESTED RSVPS ARE WAITLISTED UNTIL YOU CONFIRM YOU HAVE BOOKED YOUR TRAIN TICKET OR INDICATE HOW YOU WILL GET THERE (BY CAR, ETC.)
AGENDA FOR TODAY: Once we get there we'll take a hike on the grounds of OLANA State Historic Park as well as take a walk over the Rip Van Winkle Bridge and the Hudson River Skywalk. We'll also allot time to explore the town of Hudson. Bring an appetite! There are also many fine restaurants in town!
ABOUT HUDSON, NY: Bursting with restaurants and boutique hotels, Hudson is the ultimate car-free destination for the New Yorker who wants to dine like royalty without the hassle of the city. With hundreds of historic buildings, countless antique shops, a scenic waterfront, and cutting-edge clothing boutiques, it's a relaxing yet active weekend getaway. Hop on Amtrak at Moynihan Train Hall for two hours to Hudson Station, then walk just a few minutes into town. Read more about it ----------> HERE
GETTING THERE: Amtrak out of NY's Penn Station (Moynihan Train Hall) to Hudson, NY.
- We're taking the 7:15AM train out of Penn and arriving in HUDSON by 9:20AM. The train will drop us off right in the center of Hudson, NY.
ONE-WAY train fare from Penn Station to Hudson is $30 for coach seats. - Return train: take your pick - there's a 5:15pm return train from Hudson back to NYC. Coach ticket from Hudson back to Penn Station is $26
- PLEASE PURCHASE YOUR OWN TICKET AT https://www.amtrak.com/home.html
- Be sure to purchase your ticket early as prices do get HIGHER closer to the date.
AGENDA: Once we arrive in Hudson, the train will drop us off right in the center of town. We'll share a 10-min Uber ride to Olana.
- OLANA's landscape is free and open to all, every day of the year from 8:00AM to sunset! We'll explore the grounds of Olana. Then we'll pick up the Hudson River Skywalk and the Rip Van Winkle Bridge.
