An 8.5-mile circular walk from Cadmore End, featuring lovely Chiltern views, pretty villages, woodland paths and (if the recce was anything to go by) plenty of enthusiastic sheep.
Starting from Cadmore End Common, opposite Cadmore End Church of England Combined School, we’ll initially head south across open fields before descending into a valley. After following the footpath for a short while, we begin our first short climb of the day, heading up through Twigside Bottom Wood towards Ibstone.
From here we skirt around the edge of Ibstone Common, passing through a succession of fields containing (somewhat noisy) sheep and lambs. Hopefully they will be more interested in grass than us!
We then reach Turville Heath before descending towards the Chiltern Way, with some beautiful views across the valley as we make our way down into Turville. The village may look rather familiar, as St Mary the Virgin Church was used as St Barnabus in The Vicar of Dibley, and Turville has also appeared in a number of other films and TV programmes. More recently, it doubled as the fictional village of Bletcham in Killing Eve, complete with slightly more drama than we are hopefully expecting on this walk.
From Turville it’s time to earn our next landmark, with a steep climb up to Cobstone Windmill on the ridge above the village. The windmill was built in the early 19th century and is best known for its appearance in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang as the home of Caractacus Potts.
Having climbed all the way up and admired the views, we then immediately head back down the other side of the ridge into Fingest. The village is home to St Bartholomew’s Church, which has an unusual early Norman tower with twin gables. Weather and space permitting, there may be an opportunity for a drink in the garden at The Chequers before we tackle the final section.
The walk finishes with a steady and fairly steep climb through Hanger Wood all the way back to Cadmore End.
Although this is not a huge distance, it is still a Chilterns walk, so there are a few steep climbs along the way and some sections may be muddy depending on the weather. Please bring a packed lunch, plenty of water, sunscreen, and appropriate clothing including footwear.
Parking is available on Church Road in a large lay-by opposite Cadmore End Church of England Combined School.
Dogs are welcome and please keep them a on lead throughout the walk to ensure everyone feels comfortable and safe.
