A Summer Stroll up Winter Hill: A Cookham Classic!
Details
Length: 9.5 miles / 15.3km
Difficulty: Moderate (610ft/185m ascent)
Walk leader: Jonathan (07462794861)
A 9.5-mile circular walk from Cookham, taking in the River Thames, ancient woodland, village commons and scenic Winter Hill.
We begin at Cookham Station, heading out through open farmland and skirting Strand Water, where we pass a bear eating an ice cream. From here, we join a picturesque stretch of the River Thames, following the river before beginning our climb up Winter Hill, rewarded with expansive views across the Thames Valley, where we’ll stop for lunch.
After lunch, we descend into Bisham Woods, an ancient woodland often said to have inspired the “Wild Wood” in Kenneth Grahame’s The Wind in the Willows (1908). Wandering beneath the woodland canopy, it’s not hard to imagine Mole and Badger nearby.
Exiting the woods, we cross Cookham Dean Common and, if space and weather permit, pause for a drink at the Jolly Farmer pub.
From here, it’s just over a mile back to Cookham Station.
Please bring a packed lunch, plenty of water and dress appropriately for the weather.
Well behaved dogs welcome, but you must take full responsibility for them throughout the walk and they must remain on a lead at all times.
