Are you ready to explore the breathtaking beauty of the Chilterns? Join us as we walk the Chiltern Way in stages, discovering picturesque landscapes, charming villages, and hidden gems along the way. This long-distance trail, covering approximately 177 miles, offers a perfect mix of rolling hills, wooded paths, and open fields. From historical landmarks to cosy pubs, each stage of the Chiltern Way promises new discoveries and delightful experiences.

Section 14: Gt Offley to Peter's Green

This most easterly section of the Chiltern Way takes us through undulating farmland and charming villages in North Herts, passing through Preston, St Paul’s Walden and Whitwell.

From Great Offley we head downhill on field-edge paths towards Hitchin, turn south and uphill to pass West Wood, then pause at Preston for a snack stop on the village green. We then dip in and out of the Minsden valley, getting a wide view over Stevenage and a look at the remains of Minsden Chapel, an isolated and reputedly haunted ruin.

We’ll stop for a late packed lunch in the churchyard at St Paul’s Walden, with the opportunity for a mid-walk drink at The Strathmore Arms free house. Next we head past The Bury, childhood home of The Queen Mother, and over the chalk stream River Mimram into Whitwell. For our last few miles it’s along tree-lined byways and through arable fields to reach our end point at Peter’s Green, with the option of a post-walk drink at The Bright Star.

This is a full day walk at a steady pace, with 13.5 miles and around 320m of ascent, so moderate fitness is required. There are a few moderately steep slopes and some paths which may be muddy after rain, so walking boots /walking shoes are recommended.

Note this is a linear walk; we will be meeting at the end (Peter’s Green at 09:30, on the green opposite The Bright Star pub) where we will car pool to the start point (Great Offley for 10:00). The walk leader will be waiting in Great Offley. Parking is limited around the green in Peter’s Green but if staying for a drink after the walk you can park in the Bright Star car park. Please leave sufficient time, park considerately and conscientiously and consider car sharing where possible. Should you wish to meet us in Great Offley, please note that we are unable to guarantee a lift back from Peter’s Green at the end of the walk.

Dogs welcome on leads throughout - some fields we pass through may have grazing livestock so dog owners are asked to be mindful of this.
