What we’re about

Death Café is a global social movement which is all about raising our awareness of death in order to help people make the most of their (finite) lives.
Come and join a hosted conversation about death and dying over cake and coffee - no experience with death is necessary. We encourage participants to support each other free of any particular conclusion, belief system or course of action.
Melanie Mayell started the Christchurch Death Cafe early in 2016. Gatherings happen once a month with upcoming events and dates posted here on Meetup.

Shamanic Writing teaches you to tap into your innate intuition and learn to trust it. This is an ability we are all born with but which often lies dormant or undiscovered.

We invite you to pause the outward search for answers and instead turn up the volume on your own inner guidance. Learn how you can foster an ongoing question-and-answer conversation with Source. We will teach you a simple process and guide you through the steps so you can experience your own heart's wisdom. We are in a time of great change which can bring great uncertainty about who to trust and where to find answers. Discover how to intuit the answers for yourself through a guided writing practice.

Each class is stand-alone with first timers welcome. Returning participants will be supported to build on their momentum.

I am an author and 'light-up' coach trained in EFT tapping, shamanic healing, affirmative prayer and breath work. I teach regular 'Lives' and share guided meditations on the Insight Timer app.

You are invited to join us for a mini Death Cafe in September. This month we are using a private room at Hello Sunday. This one is short and sweet; only 90 minutes with 9 seats - so if you are keen to come along, be in quick

The hunt to find a quiet cafe space that will hold our usual 25+ people is over - and from October we will be based in Lyttelton - with a very cool cafe space all to ourselves and plenty of room for everyone

• WHAT HAPPENS AT OUR DEATH CAFE?
- It's a group-directed conversation about death and dying. Talking about death helps remind us of how amazing life is.

- We talk about all sorts of interesting death-related things; aging parents, death doulas, books we've read, death in different cultures, assisted dying, near death experiences (NDEs), philosophy, the meaning of life, and our own personal experiences to name a few. Each meeting is different - a reflection of the ever-changing mix of people on the day. There are often gasps of wonder and bursts of laughter.

- We don't promote any particular conclusion, belief system or course of action. While we dont always agree with each other - we do aim to foster kindness and compassion.

- Death Cafe is not a grief support. It will not suit people who are recently bereaved or who are actively grieving. There are better support groups more suited to this.

• WHAT TO BRING
- An open mind, curiousity, and a willingness to join in the conversation.
- A koha towards the costs of running this site on Meetup is always appreciated.

• DEATH CAFE ETIQUETTE
Seats are limited and there is always a waiting list of people keen to come. If after booking in for any reason you arent able to make it, please come back to this Meetup event page and change your attendance status - this frees up your seat for the next person on the waiting list. many thanks :-)
