6:15 PM - KICK OFF
Welcome to the Christchurch Game Developers Meetup with news from around New Zealand.
6:30 PM - Optimising for the hundreds.
Last Tide is an underwater battle royale. Face ferocious Megalodons, Great Whites and more! Chum-grenade your enemies so sharks attack them! Use unique aquatic equipment, climb the leaderboards, and experience underwater freedom of movement!
Last Tide is a 100 player battle royale game with a 4.5KM by 4.5KM map made in Unreal Engine 4, but actually having a game run with 100 people in it is a server resource nightmare.
In this talk learn how the team identified and overcame performance problems with Game Servers in Physics, General CPU Bottlenecks and Memory Constraints.
While this talk is focused around Unreal and Programming, the takeaways should be applicable to any engine, and hopefully interesting enough for artists too.
Keegan Gibson is a games programmer who has been working in the games industry for the past 8 years, with a passion for clean code and Game AI. He has worked on everything from mobile games through to AAA titles. Keegan is also active in the local Christchurch gamedev scene, including helping organise this meetup (as you may have noticed).
