• The GPS may take you to a large building that is located right in front of Next Round Games' parking lot. Go past this building and you will see smaller offices set up in a U pattern. Next Round Games is at the bottom right of the U.

Scenario Background

It is late afternoon. A blue-tinged haze of coal ash hangs over Lange’s Dust-Yard as smoke issues from the destructor’s chimney. The air is heavy with the smell of damp ash, rotting manure, and cabbage, and the greasy rank taint of boiled bones.

Everywhere you look, men and women busily comb through the city’s waste. Almost all are smoking short pipes of cheap tobacco to mask the worst of the yard’s smells. Everyone is gray with coal dust. Four or five dust-sifters’ children, five years old or so, scramble about on the central dust-heap—playing, not working. The yard’s two terriers nose about hunting for rats.

The yard is busy, as always. Dust-carts file in from their rounds picking up household garbage, tipping their contents into the stalls near the gate before setting off again. Teams of burly women descend on the fresh garbage, picking through it for large items, and sifting out the dust and cinders into bags and baskets.

A huge pile of ash dominates the center of the open yard, surrounded by offices and special stalls, storage bins, and heaps where the city’s waste is sorted, evaluated, and processed for resale. Beneath the clatter of iron wheels and the banter and shouts of the workers, the beat of the steam-powered bone crusher thumps in your ears like a heartbeat.
