DevOps, Lean, and Agile Dev is changing APM and SRE operations -Intro to APM 3.0

With the introduction of multi-cloud platforms like Pivotal Cloud Foundry and processes like Agile, Lean, and DevOps enterprises are now able to deliver customer value faster and more consistently then ever. This revolution of Cloud Native Development has now become mainstream and adopted by some of the largest enterprises in the world. This is of course all enabled by people, process, platform automation and the concepts of microservice application architecture. The microservice architecture has redefined the definition of an application. A microservice may be part of one or many applications. Microservices are continuously changed, removed, or added to the application stack. This is very different from the traditional three tiered and SOA architectures of the past and brings some new challenges when it comes to monitoring and performance management of these cloud native applications.

Traditional APM 2.0 tools did a great job of troubleshooting performance issues in distributed environments for SOA and 3-tier applications but lack the flexibility and insight when it comes to continuous delivery of next generation applications, containers, and functions. Today we will be discussing the new challenges in monitoring cloud native applications and the evolution of APM 3.0. APM 3.0 concepts include the automatic monitoring and AI-based analysis DevOps needs to manage the performance of modern applications. For developers this means technology automatically captures context, mapping all your applications and microservices without continuous additional engineering. During this discussion we will provide examples of how some of Instana’s customers recently leveraged new APM 3.0 capabilities to reduce complexity and gain better visibility into their extensive Pivotal Cloud Foundry applications with near zero effort.

Speaker Bio:
John Wikoff is a successful creator of software solutions and technical infrastructure architecture with expertise in Big Data and Application Performance Management (APM). Before joining Instana Jon has spent the last 20 years occupying various engineering positions surrounding application performance, big data, and software development. John serves as the technical champion for some of Instana’s largest enterprise customers. In this role he develops a deep understanding of their environment along with the alignment of their technical and business goals in order to provide personalized, proactive support, and guidance.
