Session-1 Title: Structured Logging in Sitecore (45 mins)
Session Abstract:
Structured Logging is currently logging best practice in software development. As the name suggests, Structure Logging in contrary to Text Logging has many advantages. The concept, Structured Logging came from the need that it is very hard to find needle in haystack. It is very hard to slice and dice logging data in Text Logging to narrow down the log data to troubleshoot issues. Text Logging is based on messages with no restriction, where asStructured Logging is based on Key/Value pairs. Asp.Net Core team made Structured Logging a part of Asp.Net Core framework.
Like many Software built with Text Logging Sitecore is also one of them. Sitecore used most popular logging framework at the time, which is Log4Net. It is Text Logging. Anyone worked is Sitecore has experienced the difficulty of drilling through huge amount log data. Can we convert Sitecore Text Logging to Structured Logging? If we can, then we will significantly improve our ability to troubleshoot Sitecore issues with the help of better logging structure and better tooling.
In this presentation, Himadri will first talk about Structured Logging and then provide a demo to show, how Sitecore logging can be converted to Structured
Logging.
