Nicolas Roeg's Don't Look Now

This is the third film in this month’s horror theme. I'm not a big fan of the horror genre. Don’t get me wrong I enjoy quite a few films that fall under the label of horror.

It seems that certain types of movies have become the flagship for what horror genre is suppose to represent which shouldn't be the case. When you break down the word horror you will find that it is rooted in fear and fear is a very subjective emotion. Since it is a subjective emotion our horror theme will focus on universal fears.

Life is already complicated enough as it is. Bringing a child into the world opens up a Pandora’s box of new fears to deal with. Knowing that someone is completely dependent on you and the possibility of failing them is a terrifying thing. I think out of all the fears that come out of being a parent the most common stems from trying to keep the child safe from harm.

Sadly unexpected things do sometimes happen. What do we do after such a tragedy? How do we cope? Can we cope?

Based on a book by Daphne Du Maurier. Hitchcock adapted three of her books into films (Rebecca, The Birds, & Jamaican Inn). Don’t Look Now was originally released as a double bill in the UK with The Wicker Man (That would have been quite a night). This film accomplishes something that few films accomplish for me. It left me feeling unsettled throughout the entire running time. This isn’t a film filled with jump scares. This is a film that knows how to construct a mood and play with your expectations. Cinematographer Anthony Richmond really took advantage of how beautiful and creepy Venice could be. Richmond would go on to work with Roeg on such films as The Man Who Fell to Earth and Bad Timing. This is a very atmospheric film where everything feels wrong, like being in a room that you know is empty but for reasons you can’t explain it feels occupied.

This Showing will be a shown at the Headquarters which is smoke free, intimate environment with limited space.

The Headquarters is in a decent area in the NE so there are many food options. I will be taking orders if any one would like any thing delivered. (Let me know in advance if you are thinking of ordering food.)

A warning for anyone with bad allergies, we do have a cat and dog residing here but the cat spends most of his time outdoors so hopefully his presence won’t be too much of a deterrent.
