To bring together Stardust Memories (1980) and Caro Diario (1993) is to confront two cinematic languages that, despite their evident formal differences, share the same obsession with identity and the act of creation: that of the filmmaker in conflict with his own image, his own time, and the very meaning of filming. In both, the director turns the camera into a mirror — a distorting mirror, at times cruel, but always revealing.
Caro Diario, by Nanni Moretti, seems to begin from the opposite point: the lightness of everyday life, wandering through the streets of Rome, humour as a form of resistance. Yet as the diary progresses, that lightness becomes an act of radical self-exposure. Moretti opens his cinema to life, to illness, to friendship, and to the city — and, in doing so, questions the very role of the filmmaker as an observer of the world. Where Allen dramatizes the creator’s crisis, Moretti turns intimacy into a method, making reality itself a poetic and political territory.
